# Typography

> A three-layer system for consistent brand typography

Typography in the Brandbook is built on a **three-layer system**: variables, styles, and components. This ensures maximum flexibility, consistency, and speed when defining or updating type across the entire document.

## 1. Variables

At the foundation, typography is controlled by variables inside the **Theme collection**:

* **Font-family** → Defines which typeface is used.
* **Font-weight** → Defines available weights.
* **Font-size** → Defines the size of headings and body.

### Important

When editing variables:

* The **font-family name must match exactly** the name in the Figma type panel.
* The **font-weight name must match exactly** the registered weight (e.g. *Medium*, *Regular*, *Bold*).

If names don’t match, connections will break and the system won’t find the correct font.

## 2. Text Styles

Variables are connected to **Text Styles** in Figma. These styles act as the middle layer between raw variables and components.

* **Headings** → From *Display* to *H6*.
* **Body text** → From *XLarge* to *XSmall*.
* **Subtitles** → Additional intermediate sizes.

Because styles are powered by variables, changing a variable updates every text style instantly.

## 3. Components

Two **master components** control all typography in the Brandbook:

* **Heading component** → Contains every heading style (Display → H6).
* **Paragraph component** → Contains every body style (XLarge → XSmall).

These components are then nested into higher-level elements, like **Heading Groups** (a heading + paragraph combo). With this system:

* You can switch heading or body sizes directly via component properties.
* Any variable or style update cascades down to every instance automatically.

## Flexibility & Versatility

* Update font-family once in **Theme variables**, and the entire Brandbook switches to the new typeface.
* Adjust font-weight or sizes, and all text components update instantly.
* Combine heading + body inside nested components, and control them with a single property.
* Scale typography consistently across Light/Dark themes and even across different brands.

This layered approach makes the system **modular and future-proof** — perfect for handling multi-brand projects or evolving design directions.

## Best Practices

* **Always edit via variables**, not directly in components or styles.
* **Match font names exactly** to avoid broken connections.
* **Use component properties** (e.g. in Heading Group) to manage text sizes instead of manual overrides.
* **Keep consistency**: headings, body, and subtitles should all come from the defined system — never create ad-hoc text styles.
