# Light/Dark Mode

> Manage dual-theme systems with seamless transitions

The **Orbital Shadcn UI Kit** is designed with a fully responsive **dual-theme system**, mirroring how Light and Dark modes work in modern web frameworks like Shadcn UI and Tailwind CSS.

Every component in the file automatically adapts to the selected theme, ensuring accurate visual parity between design and front-end environments.

## How It Works

Theme switching is powered by the **Theme** and **Mode** variable collections.

Each mode — *Light* and *Dark* — contains its own color tokens, organized into logical subgroups such as `base`, `chart`, `custom`, `sidebar`, and `shadow`.

These tokens are interconnected, allowing you to preview and modify both themes without losing any visual consistency. When you toggle the theme, all components — including buttons, typography, charts, and marketing blocks — automatically update to reflect the new mode in real time.

### Structure Overview

The variable modes are structured as follows:

| Group | Light Path | Dark Path | Purpose |
| :------ | :--------------------- | :-------------------- | :------------------------------------------------- |
| Base | `colors/light/base` | `colors/dark/base` | Core UI surfaces (backgrounds, panels, containers) |
| Chart | `colors/light/chart` | `colors/dark/chart` | Data visualizations and interactive graphics |
| Custom | `colors/light/custom` | `colors/dark/custom` | Brand accents, highlights, or specific overrides |
| Sidebar | `colors/light/sidebar` | `colors/dark/sidebar` | Navigation areas and structural UI elements |
| Shadow | `colors/light/shadow` | `colors/dark/shadow` | Elevation depth and visual hierarchy |

This modular approach ensures complete control — whether you’re working on a dark dashboard interface or a light marketing website.

### Why It Matters

Designing for both Light and Dark modes from the start prevents inconsistencies during development.

Since the Orbital Shadcn UI Kit uses **shared variable logic**, switching themes doesn’t just recolor your UI — it preserves semantic meaning (e.g., “primary background” always stays “primary background,” regardless of its tone).

This means developers and designers always reference the same tokens and logic, resulting in cleaner handoff and consistent implementation across frameworks.

### Customizing Themes

You can edit either mode directly through the **Orbital Variable Editor**.

Each variable update is reflected instantly in Figma, allowing for rapid testing and previewing before export.

Typical customizations include:

* Updating accent colors for Light/Dark contrast.
* Adjusting sidebar backgrounds for accessibility.
* Tuning shadow intensity or color balance between modes.

After customizing, export your JSON file and sync it back into Figma to maintain full alignment with your local theme settings.

## Best Practices

* 🌗 Always design and test both modes simultaneously to avoid unexpected visual breaks.
* 🧩 Keep variable names consistent across Light and Dark groups for reliable synchronization.
* ⚖️ Maintain contrast ratios that meet accessibility standards (WCAG AA+ recommended).
* 🔄 Use Tailwind color references (`slate`, `zinc`, `neutral`) to preserve tone consistency between design and code.
* 🧠 Avoid hardcoding colors inside components — always use the variable reference.

> **Tip:** Think of Light and Dark mode as visual *states*, not separate themes. A single variable system powers both, ensuring seamless transitions and consistent design logic across your entire UI.
